Bernard Koebbe II

Bernard "Bernie" Koebbe passed away at his home in Uncasville, Connecticut on 4 February 2011. Bernie was born on 1 May 1953 in New London, Connecticut to Bernard A. Koebbe and Mary Jane (Chapman) Koebbe.

Bernie attended high school in Syracuse, New York, graduating in 1971. He attended college at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology in 1979. During his time at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Bernie worked with archaeological teams to survey areas slated for the development of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and later worked as a driller during the construction of the pipeline. Bernie was also a member of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1978, and later Captain in 1984. He continued his service in the military until 1985, at which point he entered civil service with the Department of Defense until 1995.

Bernie was a member of the Mohegan Tribe and participated in several programs and organizations sponsored by the Tribe, including its archaeological field school and Veteran’s Association. He was also a member of the University of Alaska Alumni Association and the Association of Old Crows.

Bernie will be remembered for his generosity, intelligence, and love of the outdoors. He loved to read, especially about philosophy and history. He also greatly enjoyed fishing, camping, and hiking. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the outdoor charity of one’s choice.
