WEST HARTFORD - Edward McCloy, 93, died suddenly in West Hartford, early Sunday August 19, after watching his beloved Red Sox defeat the New York Yankees, 4 - 1.

Born in Shanghai, China, on Nov. 28, 1918, he was the fifth child of Charles H. and Anna Fisher McCloy; His father was athletic director of the YMCA there. The family returned to the United States in 1926, where Edward later graduated with honors from the University of Iowa in 1940. After World War II he obtained a M.B.A. at Ohio State University in 1947.

During the war he served in the United States Army Air Corps in China, obtaining the rank of Major. After the war he served in the United States Air Force as a Colonel.

After his military career he worked in data processing for CIT Corporation in New York City and then served as Vice President, Management Information Systems, at GAC Corporation in Miami, FL.

He retired to Connecticut and was active in various political and volunteer organizations, including the Montville Economic Development Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Board of Selectmen; the SE Connecticut Chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) serving as President for 8 years; the Board of Directors of SE Connecticut Tourism District; and 17 years at the Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center of SE Connecticut, and 3 years as Chairman of the Board.

Edward is survived by his widow, Jean (Forden) McCloy; four children: Amanda Clark (Robert), of Mercer Island, WA; Stephen, of Wellington, NZ; James (Caroline), of Concord, MA; and Patricia Gilbert, of Pepperell, MA; three stepchildren: Deidrienne Forster (Peter), Richmond, Surrey, England; George (Christine), Teddington, England; Johanna Gierhart-Straub (Eric), Niantic, CT; one stepson, Harvard R. Forden, New Hampton, NH, three grandchildren, to his delight, two great-grandchildren 12 step grandchildren. Wives Margaret Cormick McCloy and June Gierhart McCloy predeceased him.

In his later years he spent his summers in ‘Happinest,’ their cottage in Niantic, hosting many friends and family. During other seasons they loved going on cruises. Dancing their feet off to big band music, and even once parasailing in their 80’s, much to the amazement of their fellow passengers.
Edward was a member of the Golf Club of Avon, the Niantic Bay Yacht Club, and was a communicant at Saint Peter Claver Church of West Hartford.

An avid reader, a student of life, an engaging raconteur, his generosity, sage advice and perfectly timed one-liners will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on September 22, 2012 at 11:30 AM at Saint Peter Claver Church in West Hartford. A celebration of his life will be held thereafter.
