Eleanor Dorothy (Burckel) Gielis, 90, of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late Roger F. Gielis, passed away July 4, 2012.
Eleanor grew up in Lawrence, MA, raised her children in Newton, MA, and then lived in Dallas, TX for 31 years, where she and Roger owned a travel agency, and visited every continent but Antartica. She was one of the first women admitted to Northeastern University.
She is survived by her sister, Ruth Healey and her husband Robert, of Mashpee, MA, as well as her children, Polly Tagg and her husband Randy, son Peter Huntsman and his wife Deanna; and her grandchildren, Maggie and her husband Gabriel, Julia, Andrew, Jordan, Joshua, Jasmine, and Angel. She is also survived by her nephews John and Richard and their families. She leaves behind close friends at her home at The Canterbury in West Hartford, at West Hartford's Elmwood Senior Center, at Christ Church Cathedral, and in Dallas.
A memorial Mass is scheduled at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 21, at Christ Church Cathedral, 45 Church Street, Hartford, with a reception celebrating her life to follow at the Parish House. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, NY, 10087-7106, where her nephew John Healey is Chief, Orthopaedic Service.
