OAKDALE - Evelyn Liberacki Chamberland, age 79 peacefully slipped away in her sleep from this world to the next surrounded by her son, daughter and granddaughter on March 21, 2013 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London, CT after a long illness.
Evelyn was the beloved wife of 59 years to Roger Rene Chamberland who passed 121 days prior. Evelyn and her fraternal twin brother Chester were born at home in Bradstreet, MA on December 5th 1933. Evelyn was the daughter of Andrew Liberacki a polish farmer and entrepreneur who immigrated from Hamburg, Germany in 1911 and Anna Trojonowski Liberacki a homemaker who made her way to America from Poland with her family in the early 1900’s.
Evelyn was raised in Bradstreet and Hatfield, MA. After graduating from Northampton High School in 1951 she entered a nursing school in Medford, MA, which was later absorbed by Tufts University, graduating in 1953. She raised her children in Aldenville and Springfield, MA and then in Oakdale, CT when her husband relocated the family for his work with the Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London. Evelyn was an accomplished seamstress educating herself in all aspects of the craft of dressmaking. 1968 was an exciting new beginning for Evelyn when she applied for the only position of her 25 year career as an oncology nurse at the Uncas on Thames Hospital in Norwich, CT. She was active in the North Branch Elementary School PTA in Springfield MA, along with being both a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Leader. She was active in the Uncas on Thames Auxiliary. After retiring in 1992 she found time to devote to her grandchildren, her gardens and travel. She devotedly nursed her husband for 13 years prior to his recent death on November 30, 2013.
Evelyn he leaves daughter Susan F. Chamberland of Ivoryton, CT and son Donald B. Chamberland of Cornwall, NY, sister Dorthy Baldyga of Mystic, CT, as well as her grandchildren, Andrew of Austin, TX and Gabriella of Spartanburg, SC. She was predeceased by her brothers Anthony and Chester Liberacki, and her sisters Shopia Filkowski and Tessie (Libby) Miller Waters.
A religious service for both Evelyn and Roger will be held at St. Josephs’, 17 Squire St., New London, CT on April 27, 2013 at 10:00 AM with a reception directly following at the Essex Yacht Club, 13 Novelty Lane, Essex, CT. Burial of both Evelyn and Roger Chamberland will be later in the spring at the Saint Stanislaus Cemetery in South Deerfield, MA.
