Lillian Brown was a good lady, a very, very good lady. Friends and relatives would all say that Lil was the best. She always cared for others, often at times that seemed the most improbable.
Jack was the love of her life and she his, from the instant they met at a July 4th party many, many a year ago. They were married for 68 years.
Jack and Lil had two boys, Steve and Andy and so many good friends, it's hard to count.
Lil was a real family lady, always reaching out to her and Jack’s relatives near and far.
Lil and Jack were both born and made their home in New Haven, Connecticut. Lil was born to Louis and Rose Levine. She grew up on Platt Street with her brother Bernie right across the street from the original Troop High School, where she was was an avid student. She attended Southern Connecticut State College graduating with honors.
Many who met Lil and Jack would say that they were role models for how they would like to be as a loving couple, as loving parents and loving grand parents. Their love for each other rubbed off on whomever they met. Lil continued to share her love for others even after Jack died in 2009.
They shared a passion for sailing and travel and even worked together in Jack’s business.
Each summer they sailed their sailing ship the Sea Elf throughout Long Island Sound and up and down the east coast of the United States. It always amazed even their best friends how they loved cruising, living in often-small cramped spaces for weeks and months on end.
Jack and Lil globetrotted, loving to travel and often meeting friends abroad.
They would also regularly visit Andy at his home in Alaska.
Steve and his wife, Lesley and their family live in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Jack and Lil would drive up each year listening to opera on old-fashioned audiotapes that they had recorded at home from old-fashioned records. Old-fashioned ways kept them young and vibrant. They drove up to snowy north to visit their grandchildren, Kynan, Tyler and Natasha, even into their eight-decade!
And opera...Oh how they loved opera. Jack and Lil dad would go to the Metropolitan Opera often with Bea and Chick Cramer from Hartford. They had such good times together. Later, when travel to New York was difficult, they would go to see the Met Live digitally on a large screen in Branford.
Lil was a great cook, a passion she inherited from her mom, Rose. She most famous for her fresh fruit pies that she filled the freezer with each summer. (Peach raspberry was Steve's favorite!) The freezer was also loaded with ice cream. So, friends young and old would make a beeline for the freezer upon entry to our home on 60 Mumford Road.
Lil and Jack loved to entertain. Lil would carefully plan the menu. Thanksgiving and Christmas with 15 or more relatives was a regular event. There were always lots of kids running outside and in the basement, while the adults were occupied with boring, serious chatter.
Lil was notorious for being very sharp and amazingly organized, even into her late 80's. Her paper files would bring many CEO's to shame. Jack and Lil used a Windows computer until Lil was 88 when it needed to be replaced. A best friend suggested changing to an Apple Macintosh, which they did. So, in her ripe old age, Lil learned to operate a Mac. Go figure.
The last few years she would say that she had led a wonderful life and that if she would die today, she would have no regrets.
Lil always had a smile at the ready. Her nurses, aides and doctors would always remark how they loved to be with mom: her bright and smiling face always cheered them up. We miss her smile dearly.
